Help Build The Writer's Block Bookstore & Cafe!

The Writer’s Block Bookstore & Cafe is set to be Anchorage, Alaska’s newest (and only) independent bookstore focusing on new books and Alaska-based authors. The Writer’s Block will blend the best of two worlds by coupling a truly unique bookstore with a cafe that serves up delicious homemade food made from locally available farms and suppliers. You won’t find our dishes anywhere else in town. From our coffees, teas, craft beers from local breweries to a tasty selection of wines, you’ll feel right at home catching up with friends, discovering new literature, or maybe even meeting your favorite local authors.

Sunday mornings will come alive with a 90 minute house concert put on by local musicians from all fields of music and an interlude for a brief reading of either poetry or short story.

The big picture is to have a space that will be a venue for writers, readers, artists, musicians and families… weekly events, monthly art shows and regular book signings, readings and live music performances will be posted on the events page of the website (currently under construction).

And if you’re not up for leaving your home, there will be a new place to buy your favorite books online—a place you can feel good about supporting. We’ll even deliver books or lunch right to your door here in Anchorage.

We’ve got the perfect location in mind, right in the heart of Spenard. Our architect and builder have been working hard to design a new space and venue that will not only be aesthetically beautiful, but also create a warm welcoming environment for the whole family.

Vered Mares, a local publisher living and working in Spenard, saw a huge gap in what was offered to hungry readers and cafe goers. Four years ago, she started her publishing company and realized there were no NEW book independent bookstores in Anchorage. Sure, Barnes & Noble was in mid-town, but they close early, don’t serve great food or wine, and lack the expertise to serve the local community. We all love Title Wave, but they stopped selling new books a few years ago. Where else is there to go here in town? Knowing the answer to that question, Vered decided to build it. We hope to have the doors open before the end of the year.

But, we need your help! We’re 90% of the way there with a complete team of people working to make it all happen. Please help us get this important venue off the ground and opened!
